MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage)

A gentle, rhythmic technique that helps support the natural movement of lymph fluid in the body.

Using light, precise strokes, the therapist encourages fluid flow, reduces swelling, and promotes a calming, restorative effect on the nervous system. It is comfortable, slow, and deeply relaxing.

MLD is a structured system with specific hand movements and sequences. Core elements include:

  1. Skin stretching very light, directional movements that stretch the skin without sliding

  2. Rhythmic pumping gentle, repetitive pressure to stimulate lymph vessels

  3. Circular and spiral motions to encourage lymph flow toward major drainage areas

  4. Proximal-to-distal sequencing clearing central lymph nodes before working outward

  5. Decongestive pathways redirecting fluid toward functioning lymphatic regions

MLD is not deep tissue work. Pressure is intentionally light because lymph vessels lie just beneath the skin.

MLD influences the body through:

  1. Stimulation of lymphatic flow supporting fluid movement and reducing stagnation

  2. Reduction of interstitial swelling helpful for mild edema and post-treatment puffiness

  3. Parasympathetic activation slow, repetitive touch calms the nervous system

  4. Pain modulation gentle input reduces protective muscle tone

  5. Immune support (indirect) by improving lymph circulation
