Facilitation

Expressive Movement Facilitation (EMF) describes practices that use guided movement, breath work, and somatic techniques to help people explore movement patterns, improve body awareness, and support emotional or functional goals.

What EMF is

Sessions typically include movement exploration, guided facilitation, adaptations for ability levels, and education about self‑practice. EMF is primarily educational and experiential rather than a medical treatment unless incorporated into a regulated clinician’s therapeutic plan.

ISMETA (the International Somatic Movement Education & Therapy Association) frames somatic movement education and therapy as a profession with a Scope of Practice, Standards, Core Competencies, and Code of Ethics, and it explicitly positions the work as enhancing human functioning and body‑mind integration through movement.

What clients can expect (movement exploration, guided facilitation, adaptations) and typical goals (improved movement quality, body awareness, stress regulation).

What EMF for elders looks like:

Expressive Movement Facilitation (EMF) for older adults

Expressive Movement Facilitation (EMF) for older adults is a developmentally adapted, movement‑based, educational approach that supports balance, mobility, body awareness.

EMF for seniors uses gentle, guided movement, breath work, imagery, and somatic awareness to improve posture, gait, balance confidence, and interoception. Sessions are typically low‑impact, play‑ and task‑based, and emphasize safety, pacing, and functional goals (walking, sit‑to‑stand, transfers).

When research has examined somatic methods with older adults it reports feasibility, improved body awareness, and potential gains in mobility and balance confidence.

Scope of practice for EMF with children:

Expressive Movement Facilitation (EMF) for children

Expressive Movement Facilitation (EMF) for children is a movement‑based, educational and therapeutic approach that focuses on body awareness, play‑based movement, and somatic learning; it is not a separately regulated medical treatment in Ontario, and when offered to kids it must be delivered with age‑appropriate adaptations, parental consent, and within the provider’s authorized scope.

EMF can be applied across the lifespan, including children, using developmentally appropriate methods such as play, guided exploration, and simple movement patterns.

What parents should expect:

01

parental consent required, screening, referral policy noted and emergency contact details.

02

EMF for children — play‑based somatic movement to support body awareness and regulation; educational, not medical. EMF is not a substitute for psychiatric diagnosis.

Adapted movements for developmental stage and chaperone policies for minors.
