Dance with the Sea

Hormozgan is a coastal province in southern Iran, stretching along the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. Life in Hormozgan has always been shaped by the sea. The culture of this region reflects a blend of Persian, Arab, African, and Indian influences, visible in its music, rituals, clothing, and architecture.

Villages such as Laft, Suhaili, and Bandar Kong preserve ancient customs, communal ceremonies, and a strong sense of hospitality. The rhythm of daily life follows the sea: fishing seasons, prayers for calm waters, and festivals that celebrate the gifts of the sea.

Rezif Dance

Rezif is one of Hormozgan’s most recognizable traditional dances, performed in a line or circle with rhythmic footwork and strong, grounded movements. It is usually accompanied by powerful percussion, dohol and sorna, and expresses unity and strength. Rezif often appears in ceremonies connected to the sea, communal gatherings, and celebrations, reflecting the region’s Afro-Persian musical heritage and its deep connection to rhythm and ritual.

Neham

Neham is a traditional vocal style of Hormozgan, often performed by fishermen. It is a working rhythm, a spiritual anchor, and a way for fishermen to stay connected and coordinated during long hours on the water.

Sangani

Sangani is a lively, energetic dance rooted in the Afro-Persian heritage of Hormozgan. It features fast footwork, shoulder movements, and syncopated rhythms played on local drums. Sangani is often performed at weddings, festivals, and Zar ceremonies, rituals connected to African spiritual traditions that survive in Hormozgan’s coastal communities.

Traditional Coffee Ceremony

Hormozgan’s traditional coffee ceremony reflects the region’s Arab and African cultural influences. Coffee is brewed strong and spiced, often with cardamom, and served in small cups during gatherings, negotiations, and celebrations. The ceremony is slow, respectful, and communal: a way to welcome guests, resolve conflicts, and strengthen social bonds.
